The usefulness of design

Over the years, one aspect of design I never ignore is its usefulness. While many prioritize aesthetics or get caught up in the technicalities of functionality, usefulness is the unsung hero that ensures a design truly serves its purpose. It’s not the same as aesthetics, although they can complement each other. Nor is it identical to functionality, though they are directly related. Usefulness is a distinct pillar of great design—one that bridges the gap between beauty and practicality.

I’m often asked how I manage to come up with designs that are both engaging and effective. My answer is simple: put usefulness first. A design that’s useful becomes inherently usable. And let’s face it, usability is what turns a design into a successful tool. Usefulness, in essence, is the heart of usability.

Some may assume that this principle applies exclusively to UX designers. I strongly disagree. It extends to graphic and visual designers as well. Whether you’re creating a brand logo, a social media banner, or an interactive app interface, the question remains the same: is this design useful? Does it help the user achieve their goals? Without this core focus, even the most visually stunning designs risk falling flat.

To put it simply, usefulness enables users to achieve their objectives. It’s the easiest path to aligning design goals with business needs. A useful design not only satisfies the end-user but also drives success for the stakeholders behind the project.

So, whether you’re sketching a wireframe, creating a digital illustration, or strategizing a marketing campaign, always put usefulness first. It’s the foundation of great design and the key to long-term impact.
